Both of the kids\, who are introverted and behavioral\, find comfort in the letters they exchange with each other. Young love blossoms and the couple runs away together without telling anyone. After an altercation with the Khaki Scouts that Sam was staying with\, the children make their way to an island they call Moonrise Kingdom and set up camp. Their romantic tension builds as they dance on the beach and eventually share their first kiss.
