Join us at the Swannanoa Library today for an exclusive screening of the critically acclaimed movie, Harriet! The movie follows the life story of Harriet Tubman, originally known as Araminta “Minty” Ross. Since being struck in the head as a girl, Minty dreamed of being free in the Antebellum South. However, her slave owner reneges on his promise to Minty’s father to free her, her mother, and her siblings. That didn’t stop her from making a harrowing break for freedom to the North that nearly drowned her. Once safely in Philadelphia, she takes on a new name: “Harriet” for her mother and “Tubman” for the husband she left behind. Learn how this American hero made history as “Black Moses,” ferrying slaves out of the South despite the constant threat of death.

This movie is rated PG-13. Snacks will be provided.

A movie poster advertising the 2019 film, "Harriet." In the blackened background stands a determined-looking dark-skinned woman in a long, striking red coat. She holds an old gun in her hand, looking over her shoulder directly at the camera. She is wearing a matching red headscarf beneath a brown ten-gallon hat. There is text centered in front of her that reads, "Be free or die." Below the text is a stylized letter H that appears to be made of blood or spray paint. In front of this is text that reads, "Harriet." Below that, there is more text that reads, "The unbelievable true story of Harriet Tubman, an American legend."
